Portrait of a Girl with Her Mouth Open
This artwork is a portrait of a girl with her mouth open showing her teeth and tongue. The drawing was sketched with a grey marker and pen to establish placement of the eye, nose, mouth and primary shadows. Scaled percentages of shades of grey markers were used to build the forms of facial features and proportions. A black marker added depth to the darkest shadows in the mouth, around the head and in the visible eye. Red pen and markers were used add flowing locks of hair across girl’s face on her right side. A white paint marker and gel pen were used to create striking, pinpoint highlights that create a shiny effect on the tongue, teeth, lips, eyes and skin. The white pops in contrast to the orange construction paper background and enhances a realistically rendered style in combination with the impressionistic style. Additional locks of hair were built up over the nose to create a clinging, wrapping, wet visual effect. The girl looks energetically forward, directly at the viewer, with her eyebrow raised and mouth agape in an animated expression.
