Portrait of a Woman Screaming

This artwork is a portrait of a woman screaming. A thin black pen was used to draw an initial sketch of the eyes, nose, mouth and flowing strands of hair. Starting from light to dark, various shades of grey markers were used to add shading and build up forms with subtle shadows. A black marker was used to push the deepest shadows further back into the portrait. Light yellow marker helps to give the skin of the face a slight glow of color that differentiates from the toned tan paper background. Red marker was used for the lips, and blue marker was used to add streaks of color to the hair. A white gel pen adds striking highlights and wisps of hair that help define the curls and swirls around the form of her face. The young woman’s eyes are closed tight with her mouth wide open in an animated scream that suggests a connection to, and intense expression of, an inner emotion.
