Portrait Sketch of a Man’s Face in Black White Red and Blue
This is a portrait sketch of a man’s face in black, white, red and blue. The initial sketch started with the black marker to block in the darkest shadows, mouth, nose eyes and sockets in a silhouetted style. A large shadow below and to the side of the face adds a unique stylistic element and pushes the lighter parts of the face forward. A thick red marker was used to fill in midtones, primarily within the large shadow, and establishes the placement of the hair and jaw. A white paint marker is used in an expressionistic manner to loosely sketch highlights, giving slightly more form to the eyes, nose, lips, cheekbones, forehead, hair and beard. The translucency of the paint marker over the black marker creates a blue color where the mediums overlap, primarily softening the lips. The 184 lb. toned blue paper stands neutrally in the background while the portrait sketch floats to the foreground. The man gazes intently to the left of the viewer.
