Face with Skin Rolls
This a drawing of a face with skin rolls. The drawing started as a pen sketch of a character concept with exaggerated eyes. A variety of mediums and were used to render the bulging forms and folds of the skin around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, nose and mouth. Colored pencils were used to add darker creases and shadows. Markers deepened the darkest shadows further and helped to add more depth to the eyeballs and eyelids. The blue color in the eyes, along with the red and yellow irises, move the drawing towards an other worldly, alien character study. Watercolors were used to create flowing gradients, textures and flesh tones that ground the artwork with slightly realistic rendering, particularly around the normalized nose. A white gel pen and white paint marker add bright highlights and translucency to the skin that help pop the peaks of the rolls forward in perspective. By shifting the character’s gaze slightly up and past the viewer the artwork encourages approach to explore the unique structure of the face and eyes.
