Portrait of an Old Man with a Long Beard

This artwork is a portrait of an old man with a long beard. The portrait was first drawn with a thin black pen to outline the shape of the face and beard as a whole. A grey marker was used to block in rough areas of shadow around the eyes, nose, mouth and side of the face. The pen, darker grey marker and black marker were then used to define more details in the face, deepen shadows, and identify the darkest parts of the outline around the beard. A white paint marker and white gel pen created the highlights and add texture to the beard and flowing strands of hair. A thick black marker lays down a base for the upper body clothing. Black gauche paint was was used to darken shadows and fill in the background and clothing. The lightest parts of the portrait drawing are the beard and hair, and they pop forward against the dark areas and toned grey paper. The man looks forward and down, head turned, with his mouth slightly open in a suggestion breath.
