Abstract Face with Red Lips

This is an abstract face with red lips. The face was loosely sketched with a variety of colored pencils on 184 lb. toned tan paper. Swirling lines of black marker built up shadows and large round eyes. Roughly applied white paint marker was used to carve the outline of the face’s shape and accentuate highlights. Oil pastels were used to add rich layers of blended color and erratic lines, including smearing of red around the lips. The expressionistic style adds a frenetic energy to the mottled face while the large round eyes with highlights stare straight forward in an unsettling manner.
